Member of Parliament for South Dorset
Richard Drax is the newly elected Conservative MP for South Dorset. A Dorset man, with experience of life as a former journalist and soldier, his aim is to continue to serve the people of South Dorset, having campaigned for four years to win the seat. Before turning to politics, he spent nine years in the Coldstream Guards, followed by 17 years as a journalist. He first qualified on the The Yorkshire Evening Press, and followed this with stints at Tyne Tees TV, The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Express. He moved onto broadcast journalism in 1999, joining BBC Radio Solent and BBC South Today and covering his home county of Dorset and the South West.
Nine years on, he was selected as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for South Dorset, at the same time taking over the family business and retiring from the BBC. Married to Elsebet, from Norway, he has four children. He is Patron of a mental health charity and his Kids to Farm Project, where local schoolchildren spend a day on his farm, is proving hugely popular.
